Work Experience (formal)

This page is a formal presentation of my work experience, organized chronologically. I instead recommend the organization by project and skill but I know some people like to see this.

Freelancer in Computer Software Industry

April 2002 -Present (over 9 years)

Worked on projects for a number of clients, from large blue-chip companies to small start-ups. Data mining, data validation, complex web sites and presentation of information are common projects.

Chief Technology Officer

FlyingColor Group (Public Company; 11-50 employees)
Marketing and Advertising Industry
February 2000 -March 2002 (2 years 2 months)

As the company grew in the Internet boom my responsibilities included: software product design, web programming, database design/setup, unix server maintenance, interviewing and hiring technical staff (in-house and outsourced), negotiating telecoms contracts and other management duties.

Freelancer in Computer Software Industry

October 1995 -December 2000 (5 years 3 months)

Worked on many internet web forms, mainly in C++, later in PHP. Also work on video kiosks, java applis, java email broadcast system, javascript and dynamic HTML.

Worked (mostly working through other companies) on the web sites and projects of a number of large companies (IBM, Reuters, Heineken, Royal Sun Alliance, Mc.Vities and more).

Partner at NetSchool (Higher Education Industry)

February 1997 -February 1999 (2 years 1 month)

Starting as some of my ideas in intensive education, this morphed into an online English teaching system for Japanese. In late 1997 I formed a partnership with a private investor, a graphics artist and a narrator. We had a fairly good product but had poor marketing and failed to interest other investors. In a classic example of poor timing we finally gave up about 6 months before the internet boom big money appeared.

Software Designer

Fact Communications (Public Company; 1-10 employees)
Computer Software Industry
May 1995 -October 1995 (6 months)

Responsible for HTML and CGI coding as the World Wide Web just started to take off. Also evaluation and use of various multimedia tools.

Owner at Druid Games (Computer Games Industry)

June 1989 -March 1995 (5 years 10 months)

Started this business to produce arcade-style computer games, over-the-table role-playing games, and play-by-mail (PBM) games. Most successful were football PBM games (about 100 players in each game; written in C++ and using effective artifical intelligence for the non-player characters).

(Incidentally this company was started informally in early 1988, but not full-time until mid-1989.)
